Later that evening, after providing more details about what occurred on Highway 54, and the assistance of militia, Miles leaned back in his seat, his belly full, his thoughts circling around the day’s events and the road ahead. “Do you really think we can win this war?”

“Don’t entertain that thought,” Gunnar said. He rose from the table and took their plates out to the kitchen. “With all that has happened to this country, this is a marathon, not a sprint, Miles. Understand? Think about it any other way and you’ll become frustrated and want to give up. There will be many setbacks.”

He nodded. “But some of them have seen my face.”

“Behind the flag?”

“I wasn’t wearing it.”

“Then they haven’t seen you.”

“But they know I’m here.”

“Were you added to the census?”

Miles shook his head. “No.”

“Then, leave that to me. With today’s loss, they will round up more residents to send north. I will have your name added to one of the transportations. They’ll believe you are gone or escaped in transit. We’ll keep it that way.”

“But why? There are more of us now. I can join the militia and we can hit the PLA where—”

“No! You need to stay anonymous. Trust is earned not given, and right now trust is at an all-time low around these parts. With so much at stake, Miles, we can’t risk it. We made that mistake before and it cost us dearly. It cost your mother her life. Those you believe would have your back may be the same ones that will stab you in it. No. For now, we work alone. When the militia’s assistance is required they will know.”

“Then how do you suppose we win? I’m only one man. The General has collaborators, Chinese troops. We need an army.”

“And we will build one but your job right now is different. It is to work in the shadows, be the fly in the ointment, inspire the common people to rise against the occupation. One person, one family, one town, one county, one city, one state at a time. That’s the only way we win back this nation.”

“But there are others out there who can help.”

“And unlike you they have remained out there, hiding, waiting for someone else to lead them. That’s you, Miles.”

He lifted his hands and shook his head. “I’m no leader.”

“You were today.”

“I had a reason,’’ Miles said.

“August and Scarlett?”

“Yeah.”

Gunnar came back to the table and leaned forward, placing both hands flat. “Every man and woman in this nation is August and Scarlett. Until they are safe, neither are your friends. Every day more are turning, finding reason to collaborate if only to survive. Our job is to turn the tide.”

He blew out his cheeks. “And how do we do that?”

“The goal right now is not to win the war but to win our people, then this town. We start small, and hit the heart of their resources.”

“Which are?”

Gunnar lifted a hand and flipped out a thumb, followed by two fingers as he reeled them off.
